Gingerbread House Day: History, Facts, & Sweet Content Inspiration

Gingerbread House Day falls on December 12th every year.

Gingerbread has been charming taste buds for more than a thousand years. Some historians mark its origin with a sweet and spicy dough made in ancient Greece around 2400 BC, while others credit Gregory of Nicopolis, an Armenian monk who may have taught French bakers how to make gingerbread in 992 AD.

Before long, the treat was produced across Europe, from German monks in the 1200s to a gingerbread bakers' guild in 1395. In 1444, Swedish nuns were baking gingerbread as a remedy for indigestion. By the 1500s, it had reached England. Famous ginger Queen Elizabeth I is often credited with popularizing the gingerbread man, commissioning edible portraits of visiting courtiers and dignitaries. Shakespeare mentions the treat in Love’s Labour’s Lost, writing, "An I had but one penny in the world, thou shouldst have it to buy ginger-bread."

In 1812, the publication of Hansel and Gretel helped gingerbread evolve into edible architecture, inspiring German bakers to build sugary fairy-tale facades. By the Victorian era, gingerbread became associated with Christmas. Queen Victoria gave a gift of gingerbread to her spaniel Dash, and Prince Albert, dressed as Saint Nicholas, rewarded his children with gingerbread for good behavior.

From there the custom only spread. Gingerbread houses began to appear in holiday displays and family celebrations, and German immigrants brought the tradition to America, where it stuck like a gumdrop to an icing roof.
